Magic IE4 Installer Pages !

If you downloaded or upgraded your IE4 not as a "real" installation or installed components from the web you don't have a setup program but only the "raw" cab files which won't install by itself. If you want to re-use these files instead of downloading again these pages are for you! Please read carefully thru this first page before continuing! Usage is easy but you can spoil your setup if your are not careful!

These download pages are based on the original setup pages found on Microsoft CDs. Any code on them is copyrighted by Microsoft Corp., we do not intend to infringe their copyright or trademarks by providing these changed pages.

They are intended for

• upgrading your IE4 to 4.01 on other computers without a new download
• installing "old" components
• reinstalling your deinstalled or wrecked "upgraded" browser or component

We changed the original pages so that they

• do not detect the OS version (so be careful what you choose! Only for Windows OS's on Intel!)
• do not detect IE version (you can use these pages on PPR2, 4.0 and 4.01 - it is not recommended to upgrade over PPR2 - there can occur very nasty problems!)
• install any language version on any language OS (however, probably not the shell upgrade, be careful!)
• install from any path you like, just choose either from some pre-selected options (some CDs and the default setup directory) or type in the full path to your setup directory
• install any component even if you don't have other components, you just need to have the right component - you can even use "old" components from the IE 4.0 CD and install them on IE 4.01
• upgrade from 4.0 to 4.01 without the ie4setup.exe program or the ie4cif.cab data file - you just need to have all necessary base components
• can (probably) install if the ie4setup.exe file fails for you

Saving your setup "cab" files

If you have upgraded earlier and don't have the setup program because you used the component add-on page or the product update page you can use this page to install your "saved" setup files on another machine or after deinstalling. What you have to do to "save" your files is

1. go to the "msdownld.tmp" directory (to be found on your first hard disk with enough space for the download)
2. open it and have a look while downloading, you will see that it fills up with .cab files
3. when the install engine switches to "installation" status drag the directory with the right mouse button and choose copy. You will then get a copy of the complete contents as "copy of msdownld.tmp". After the install engine finishes and install is complete it will probably "destroy" its contents
4. but you still have your copy !
5. store the "copy" in a safe place :-)
6. either re-use it later or transfer the files to another PC.
7. you can do this procedure with any subsequent download of a browser upgrade or single component
8. setup leaves the msdownld.tmp directory after install and sometimes there are even files in it. If you saved those files earlier you can now delete any instance of this directory.

If you already downloaded before reading this page and your msdownld.tmp files were destroyed but you haven't flushed your internet cache yet, there's still chance to recover your valuable setup files. Rightclick on your internet cache folder (get the path and name from internet options, temporary internet files, settings), choose Find ... and then search for "*.cab". Pull out the cabs to a safe place. Check our pages "Installation" section for screenshots of an install directory to see if you are missing files. There's also a list of files in the ie4cif.cab file (open it with cab viewer, pull out the ie4.cif file and read in a text editor.

Determining component version status

Setup does this by comparing the data in ie4cif.cab (see above) with the data in the registry. If you don't get a ie4cif.cab file with your download these setup pages will not have correct data for comparing. So they will tell you that no upgrade is available while you are sure your files are new ones. This is normal, setup will nevertheless work, just continue! If you get a newer ie4cif.cab with your downloads (if not in msdownld.tmp check your internet cache for it!) you can replace the one offered by us with this new one. But please do not delete our file but rename it! The ie4cif.cab we are providing is the one for IE 4.01 (build 2106.8). We also provide the one for IE 4.0 (build 1712.3) if you need it - it's the ie4cif-1712.cab file. (You can view the files in this folder by switching to details view!)

Problems

• If you get any error messages which are internet related just interprete them the right way! This is a disk setup! ;-)
• Choosing the button "Upgrade all" may not work - check each single component instead!
• If setup starts but immediately finishes with a message "component x - install failed" your component was not found - check your path!

You use these pages at your own risk, if you are not careful you may corrupt your current setup. Even if you are careful you might do this, so be very careful! There's no support for these pages, they are supplied "as is". Please don't send us any questions or problem descriptions, we don't have time to answer. If you run into a problem, probably because of a very specific situation we can't repro. If these pages don't work for you get the full setup of IE from the net or a CD! That's the best advice we can give!

Getting started ...

Download the package from above, unzip it (we included folder information, so it should unzip itself in a folder "Magic IE4 Installer") and open the new folder. If it doesn't open with the starter page automatically you either are not running IE4 or you didn't install the Desktop Update. In this case run the page "_StartMe.htm". Anyway, usually you should get the starter page automatically opened up when opening the folder. You can have a view inside the folder by choosing another view than "Web View", you can relaunch the starter page by choosing "Web View" again. You can do this at any time.
