I cannot "open link in new window" anymore
There are some related problems, also solvable by one of the following methods:
- same problem, but new window opened by a Javascript link
- Shortcuts on Desktop don't work
- Windows NT: system32 folder pops up when trying to open channels or at other occasions
Try the following solutions. For "open in new window" try the last two first, for NT try the first two first.
- Download this file: ole32.reg
and double-click on it. This registry export file will write some data back to your registry which may have been deleted by uninstalling a beta or final version. Then go to startmenu/run und type the following command: regsvr32 oleaut32.dll. After OKing you should get a success message. (If you want you can view this file in any text editor).
- If that doesn't help get this file oadist.exe. It will install the latest (well, at least the latest publically available) files for Windows OLE automation. Double-click on it after download. There is a newer version of this file, but we are not allowed to distribute it yet.
- Microsoft's own advice: uninstall Desktop Update (see our KB Direct Links for December 97).
- This is a new and sometimes successfully used method. Download this registry export file Linkfix.reg und double-click it (see solution 1). No further action needed.
- Latest Fix, if "open in new window" has worked for some time and suddenly "vanished". Type these two commands (one after the other) in startmenu/run:
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
You should get a success message each time. Reboot Windows. Should be fixed now. This problem can happen if you installed over a beta version or an incompatible program registered wrong information in the registry.
This is a related problem:
When I click a hyperlink I get an error message like this: "cannot open internet site, check the URL
Check if you have chosen "user defined" under View/Fonts. If so, go back to "Western" and change the font and size for Western instead (Internet Options/View/Fonts). This is an officially acknowledged bug.
After first or second boot I get a blue screen (NT), an empty desktop without taskbar, an error message about "explorer.exe" after clicking "Start" (95) or something "similar".
Search for this registry key:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\Cabinetstate
and delete the value "Settings". Reboot.
Regclean doesn't work anymore after installing IE4.
Get this file RC-Kürzung.reg and double-click it or get the very latest version of RegClean 4.01a.
I cannot view a lot of pages in offline mode when clicking them from history. However, if I check in the internet cache they are still there.
This is a very nasty bug. Basically, the history saves URLs by stripping the trailing slash. So, any URL with a trailing slash is stored in the history like this: http://www.conactive.com/ie and cannot be opened anymore since the cache correctly indexes it as http://www.conactive.com/ie/. Workaround: right-click the history entry, copy and paste it to the addressbar, type the trailing slash and hit RETURN/ENTER.
If this page helped you, drop us a note at msie@conactive.com. Maybe we are going to translate other tips as well.
